Seeking Parents Forgiveness before Ordination
“Ukasa” all of us assembled here on this day, bow in farewell to Mother and Father, Brothers and Sisters, and all amongst the Buddhist Congregation here, so that we may take ordination; Throughout immeasurable lifetimes that we have been born and reborn in this cycle of existence, if we have offended against any of you with or without your knowledge, intentionally or unintentionally, that we can recall or that is without recall throughout immeasurable lifetimes or in this present lifetime: May all assembled here, forgive us our trespasses, so that we may be pure in ordination and unblemished in our Brahma –faring in our pursuit of Nirvana in this lifetime.”
Requesting the Going-Forth (pabbajja)
Ukasa vantami phante
Sappang aparatang khamatah may phante
Maya katang punyang samina anumotittapang
Samina katang punyang mayhang tatapang
Sathu sathu anumothami
Ukasa karung-nang katva,
Pappajjam tetha may phante,

Tutiyampi ahang phante, pappajjam yacami.

Nippana sacchi-karanah-ttha-yah,

Kesah loma nakha tanta tacho,
Tacho tanta nakha loma kesah.
Taking Refuge and Ten Precepts
Ahang phante, saranah-silang yacami.
Dutiyampi ahang phante, saranah-silang yacami.
Tatiyampi ahang phante, saranah-silang yacami.
After this request, the acariya will give the Refuges and Precepts, starting with homage to the Triple Gem which the applicant will repeat after him.
Namoh tassa phagavato arahato
SammasamPutthassa.
( repeat this verse three times )
The acariya says either ‘ Evam vadehi ‘ or ‘ Yamaham vadami tam vadehi.’ The ordinand responds ‘ Ama phante.’ The acariya then gives the Refuges and Precepts and the ordinand repeats after him, verse by verse:
Putthang saranang katchami, Thammang saranang katchami,
Sangkang saranang katchami,
2) Tutiyampi Putthang saranang katchami,
Tutiyampi Thammang saranang katchami,
Tutiyampi Sangkang saranang katchami,
3) Tatiyampi Putthang saranang katchami,
Tatiyampi Thammang saranang katchami,
Tatiyampi Sangkang saranang katchami,
After going to the Triple Gem, the acariya will say, ‘Tisaranagamanam nitthitam ‘, and the ordinands should respond, ‘Ama bhante’. Now, ordinands become ‘Novices’. They will need to practice Ten Precepts. Novices should chant the Ten Precepts after the acariya verse by verse, as follows:
1. Panatipatah veramani,
sikkhapatang samahtiyami.
2. Atinnatanah veramani,
sikkhapatang samahtiyami.
3. Aprah-mah-cariyah veramani,
sikkhapatang samahtiyami.
4. Musavata veramani, veramani,
sikkhapatang samahtiyami.
5. Suramerayah-majjah-pamah-tethana veramani,
sikkhapatang samahtiyami.
6. Vikala-phojanah veramani,
sikkhapatang samahtiyami.
7. Najha-gitava-tita-visuka-tassanah veramani,
sikkhapatang samahtiyami.
8. Malaghantha-vilepanah-tharanah-mantanah-
viphusanatthanah veramani,
sikkhapatang samahtiyami.
9. Uccasayana-mahasayana veramani,
sikkhapatang samahtiyami.
10. Jatarupah-rajata-patigahana veramani,
sikkhapatang samahtiyami.
Then, the acariya will say:
“Imani tasa-sikkaha-patani sama-tiyami”
(repeat this verse three times)
Requesting Dependence (nissaya)
Ahang phante, saranah-silang yacami.
Tutiyampi ahang phante, saranah-silang yacami.
Tatiyampi ahang phante, saranah-silang yacami.
(Upa-jjha-yo may phante hohi!) – three times –

The applicant chants the following three times:
Ajjah-tageh-thani thero, mayhang pharo,
ahangpi the-rassa pharo.

The Preceptor will then put the strap of bowl over the head of the novice and requests him to retire to a point outside the assembly with the words.
