- Alms offering (When you don’t know what to read 3)
Every morning, get up and prepare food for the monks. It is our daily accumulation of merit and is continuing the age of Buddhism. We keep this good tradition for all Buddhist companies to see. So, they will follow our actions. Consequently, Buddhism will prosper and be a refuge for the people of the world.

- Light a candle on Buddhist holy days (When you don’t know what to read 3) Nowadays… “Buddhist holy day” has been forgotten. No one pays much attention to it or gives it enough importance unlike in the days of our ancestors. But in this era, we were born to pursue perfection, become a model of merit making, and become a light for human beings. Luang Por therefore invites you to light a lamp or a candle in front of your house on a Buddhist holy day to let everyone know that “Today is a holy day” to serve as a reminder to those who passed by. People will remember that “Today is a holy day” should only do things that are virtuous. They will be able to remember the Triple Gem.

- On a Buddhist holy day, we must go to the temple (When you don’t know what to read 3)
We, Buddhists, have to stop on Buddhist holy days to go to temples, listen to the Dharma, and practice the Dharma. We go to a temple to perform at least 3 out of 10 bases of meritorious actions, namely, offering alms, keeping the precepts, and practicing meditation. And every time we go to the temple, don’t forget to invite our children too. Prepare sweet and savory dishes to offer to monks and novices and to feed those who practice Dharma at the temple. Let’s help clean the temple, sweep the floors, or do whatever that earns us merits. It could be collecting garbage or keeping temple goers’ shoes organized. We must pay respect to the temple we visit since it is the enshrined place of the Triple Gem. We must pay respect to the monks. Whether offering the food to monks or listening to the Dharma talk, we perform them in a respectful way. We bring only good things into the temple, and keep out bad things such as liquor, cigarettes, drugs, and pornography. We remove all these bad things from the temple. This is what our grandparents have practiced as a norm in the past. But nowadays we ignore that norm. Therefore, it is time for us to restore these good things and bring them back again.

- On a Buddhist holy day, we must keep the 8 precepts (When you don’t know what to read 3)
On weekdays, Buddhists have to observe the 5 precepts completely and meticulously and on a Buddhist holy day, Buddhists should observe the 8 precepts. This action will be a model of merit in helping to restore the past wholesome practice on a Buddhist holy day. All Buddhists will see the value of a Buddhist holy day. Even on a Buddhist holy day that corresponds to a working day, we still observe the 8 precepts. When a colleague asks, we will answer that we observe the 8 precepts because today is a Buddhist holy day. At first, they might not understand us. They might laugh at us or say we are old fashioned or we are ignorant. We must be calm and composed and explain to them that it is neither old fashioned nor ignorant, but it is indeed a Buddhist tradition. As Buddhists, we must practice this way. After a while, the laughter will fade one by one. Some will admire our practice. Although some people might tease us, we respond with our smile and reason. On the outside of those people, we may see teasing. But, on the inside, there could be an admiration and inspiration to want to study the Dharma of the Lord Buddha. For that, we will also receive merit as a guide. A guide who gives Dharma and who leads by example. Our actions will result in our own benefit and also others’ benefit. It is also a path of our merits.

- Why do we have to wear white to temples? (When you don’t know what to read 3)
When we, Buddhists, come to a temple or attend various merit-making activities, we should dress in modestly white clothes. Wearing a white dress will have the following benefits:
- White clothes will make us aware of being a lay disciple who esteems to be closer to the Triple Gem. We will be composed and careful of our manners automatically.
- Make our mind calm, clean, and bright. It is a preparation before listening to the Dharma and practicing the Dharma. It makes us attain Dharma easier.
- It is economical and brings equality. With all wearing whites, there is no contest to tell who is rich, who is poor, who is beautiful, and who is handsome. When entering the temple, everyone is equal. All desire to pursue perfection and do good deeds.
- We make merit to the fullest because wearing a white dress will make us wander to other places less.
- The white attire looks beautiful and is admired by the public.

- Clean temple…clean mind (When you don’t know what to read 3)
Help keep our temples clean, cool, and pleasant. When Khun Yai was still alive, she attached great importance to this matter and regarded it as important as life and soul. She always reminded us that clean and pleasant temples represent the minds of those with high morals. And it is to honor those who visit the temple as well. She compared it to a reception room. If the temple is dirty and the temple bathroom is not clean, it seems that the temple does not welcome guests. Therefore, we must respect the welcoming of temple goers by helping to clean the temple. So that no dirt and clutter will remain at the temple. This is our Khun Yai’s vision. May the disciples of Khun Yai keep her vision and tradition.

- Cleanliness attracts wealth (When you don’t know what to read 3)
Clean our house well, especially the prayer room, which is like a merit field for the family. All family members must join forces to help clean the room and make it suitable to install a Buddha image representing the Lord Buddha. Let there be no spider’s web or dust. If our prayer room is clean and tidy, our guardian angels will come to worship the Lord Buddha and will continue to protect and care for our family. Subsequently, auspiciousness and wealth will follow to our house. So clean the prayer room first and then clean other rooms in the house and area around the house. Let our house be clean, livable, and suitable for layperson’s meditation practice. Let us invite all family members to practice Dharma together and create a good atmosphere with a smile, pleasant words and no profanity. Our homes will have a good atmosphere and will attract our guardian angels who protect us and rejoice in our merit.

- Turn off your mobile phone while listening to the Dharma and practicing the Dharma. (When you don’t know what to read 3)
During the Dharma practice or listening to the dharma, we have to be free from all worries. Therefore, every Sunday at the temple, the MC recommends that we turn off the communication device whether a mobile phone or other devices. It is temporarily turned off while we are practicing dharma or listening to dharma. During Luang Pu Wat Paknam’s time, when he taught Dharma, he would give warnings often at intervals. Moreover, Luang Pu himself acted as a role model. Regardless of whether the meditation practitioner was a child, an adult, a woman, a man, he would walk gently past them when they were meditating. Some people are deep in meditation and are about to achieve inner peace. If we walk past them, the noise from us will shake their concentration. It will cause them to miss a good opportunity in inner peace. We ourselves will have sin. This sin will obstruct in reaching inner peace in every life we are born to. When we meditate and are about to achieve inner happiness, there will be some obstacle that forces us to lose concentration and causes us to give up perseverance. The Lord Buddha was a good role model for this matter. One day during Lord Buddha’s time, novice Bandit was practicing Dharma and was close to the attainment of Arahatship. Meanwhile, Phra Sariputra is about to bring food for the novice. Fried carp with rice. He was worried that the novice might not have anything to eat. The Lord Buddha knew this from his power and also that on that day, the novice would attain nirvana. But if Phra Sariputra had arrived first, he would have called the novice or made a noise. The action would affect the practice of the novice and cause the novice to miss the opportunity to become an Arahant. Lord Buddha himself had to go and waited for Phra Sariputta at the door. He then invited Phra Sariputta to talk about Dharma and made conversation long enough that the novice attained Arahantship. Lord Buddha then opened the way for Phra Sariputra to see the novice. To disturb those who practice Dharma is not a small matter at all. The sin will hinder the meditation practice and the ears of the sinners would not work well for at least 500 lives.

- Contemplating death (When you don’t know what to read 3)
There was a female disciple who came to practice Dharma every day. Her mind was cheerful and she wanted to meditate every day. She asked Luang Por how we avoid being careless in life? Because when one is not careless in his life, he will be diligent to meditate. Luang Por replied that one must contemplate death. Remember that even fully enlightened Lord Buddhas, individually enlightened Lord Buddhas, the most distinguished disciples of Lord Buddha, the great disciples, and noble individuals all have to die. Those who have reached the Triple Gem or those who have reached the state of perfect equanimity and awareness also will die. The Great Emperor who rules the four celestial continents and who has great power and owns the Seven Jewels that can fly in the air also will die. Great kings, kings, billionaires, millionaires, the rich, the poor all die. We must think like that. To think that way is to contemplate death. The female disciple said that it was too long. Can she have a short version? Let us put it this way. There are 2 words. Easy to remember. Have you ever seen an ambulance carrying a sick person passing by? The ambulance will turn on a loud siren on the road. Listen carefully. It sounds like this. “Tai nay” or “Die for sure”. This is the shortest version to contemplate death. Learn to recite it. Luang Por guarantees that everyone will be diligent to meditate.
