โกสิยะ เศรษฐีผู้ตระหนี่
เศรษฐีคนหนึ่ง ชื่อโกสิยะ อาศัยในนิคมสักกะ ไม่ไกลจากกรุงราชคฤห์ มีนิสัยตระหนี่ มีสมบัติ ๘๐โกฏิ ซึ่งสมบัติเหล่านั้นเขาไม่เคยให้ใคร ทั้งตนเอง บุตร ภรรยา สมณะและพราหมณ์ทั้งหลายก็ไม่เคยได้ประโยชน์จากทรัพย์เหล่านั้น
วันหนึ่งเศรษฐีไปเข้าเฝ้าพระเจ้ามคธ ระหว่างกลับบ้าน ได้เห็นชาวบ้านคนหนึ่งกำลังกินขนมเบื้อง จึงเกิดอยากกินขนมเบื้องเป็นอย่างยิ่ง เมื่อกลับถึงบ้านคิดว่า ถ้าตนบอกว่าอยากกินขนมเบื้องก็จะมีคนอีกมากอยากกินด้วย ซึ่งจะทำให้สิ้นเปลืองวัตถุในการทำ มีงา ข้าวสาร เนยใส น้ำอ้อย เป็นอันมาก จึงตัดสินใจไม่บอกใคร เพราะกลัวเสียเงิน แต่เมื่อผ่านไปหลายวัน เขาก็ยังอยากกิน จนร่างกายผอมลง มีเส้นเอ็นปรากฏ
ภรรยาเศรษฐีเห็นความเปลี่ยนแปลงของสามีแล้ว จึงเข้าไปถามเพื่อหาสาเหตุ ท้ายที่สุดเศรษฐีจึงบอกภรรยาว่าตนอยากกินขนมเบื้อง และให้ภรรยาทอดขนมเบื้องเพียงพอเฉพาะตนคนเดียวเท่านั้น เพราะไม่ต้องการแบ่งให้ผู้อื่นแม้แต่ภรรยาของตน แล้วให้ภรรยาใช้ข้าวสารหัก จัดเตรียมน้ำนม เนยใส น้ำผึ้ง และน้ำอ้อยหน่อยหนึ่ง ขึ้นไปทอดขนมเบื้องที่ชั้นบนของปราสาท ๗ ชั้น โดยเศรษฐีได้ปิดประตูใส่ลิ่มและสลักทุกประตูตั้งแต่ประตูชั้นแรกจนถึงประตูชั้นที่ ๖ แล้วขึ้นไปยังชั้นที่ ๗ ปิดประตู เพื่อไม่ให้ใครเห็น
หลังเสด็จออกจากสมาบัติ พระศาสดาทรงตรวจดูหมู่สัตว์ที่พอแนะนำในการตรัสรู้ได้ ทรงเห็นอุปนิสัยโสดาปัตติผลของเศรษฐีพร้อมทั้งภรรยา จึงตรัสให้พระมหาโมคคัลลานเถระไปกำราบเศรษฐีให้สิ้นพยศ ให้ทั้งสองผัวเมียถือขนมและน้ำนม เนยใส น้ำผึ้งและน้ำอ้อย นำมายังพระเชตวันด้วยกำลังของพระเถระ ซึ่งพระองค์กับภิกษุ ๕๐๐ รูปจะนั่งในวิหารเพื่อรอขนม
พระเถระจึงไปยังบ้านเศรษฐีด้วยกำลังฤทธิ์ ยืนที่หน้าต่างของปราสาท เมื่อเศรษฐีเห็น จึงขับไล่ แต่พระเถระก็ยังไม่ไป พระโมคคัลลานะแสดงฤทธิ์ด้วยการเดินจงกรม นั่งคู้บัลลังก์ในอากาศ มายืนที่ขอบหน้าต่าง บังหวนควันขึ้น จนเศรษฐีคิดว่าพระเถระอยากได้ขนมจริง ๆ จึงบอกให้ภรรยาทอดขนมชิ้นเล็ก ๆ ชิ้นหนึ่งให้แก่พระเถระ แต่ขนมชิ้นเล็กเมื่อลงกระทะกลับกลายเป็นชิ้นใหญ่ เศรษฐีไม่พอใจ จึงลงมือทอดเอง แต่ยิ่งทอดขนมก็ยิ่งใหญ่ขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ จนเขาเกิดความเบื่อหน่าย จึงให้ขนมแก่พระเถระหนึ่งชิ้น
แต่เมื่อหยิบขนมหนึ่งชิ้น ขนมทั้งหมดกลับติดกันเป็นชิ้นเดียว ทำเท่าไหร่ก็ไม่สามารถแยกขนมได้ จนเศรษฐีเหนื่อย ความหิวและความต้องการขนมได้หายไป จึงบอกให้ภรรยาถวายขนมทั้งหมดแก่พระเถระ
พระเถระแสดงธรรมแก่คนทั้งสอง กล่าวคุณพระรัตนตรัย แสดงผลของการให้ทานว่า ทานที่บุคคลให้แล้ว ย่อมมีผล ยัญที่บุคคลบูชา ย่อมมีผล จนเศรษฐีเกิดความเลื่อมใส
พระเถระได้พาเศรษฐีและภรรยาไปเข้าไปเฝ้าพระศาสดา ณ พระเชตวัน ด้วยกำลังฤทธิ์ ทั้งสองได้ถวายทักษิโณทกแก่ภิกษุสงฆ์มีพระพุทธเจ้าเป็นประมุข ภรรยาใส่ขนมในบาตรของพระตถาคต ทั้งสองได้บริโภคขนมจนพอแก่ความต้องการ และแม้จะถวายขนมแก่ภิกษุทุกรูปในวิหาร ให้แก่คนอนาถาทั้งหลาย ขนมก็ไม่หมดสิ้นไป พระพุทธองค์จึงให้ทั้งสองทิ้งขนมบริเวณซุ้มประตูพระเชตวัน ซึ่งทุกวันนี้ที่นั้นก็ยังปรากฏชื่อว่า เงื้อมขนมเบื้อง
จากนั้นพระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าได้ทรงกระทำอนุโมทนา ในกาลจบอนุโมทนา ทั้งสองบรรลุโสดาปัตติผล ถวายบังคมพระศาสดา ขึ้นบันไดที่ซุ้มประตูพระเชตวัน สุดบันไดที่ปราสาทของตน ตั้งแต่นั้นมาเศรษฐีได้สละบริจาคทรัพย์จำนวน ๘๐ โกฏิ ตามสมควรถวายในพระพุทธศาสนา
ในวันรุ่งขึ้นพระศาสดาตรัสสรรเสริญพระโมคคัลลานะแก่ภิกษุทั้งหลายว่า เป็นภิกษุผู้กำราบ ไม่กระทบกระทั่งศรัทธา ไม่กระทบโภคะ ไม่ให้สกุลชอกช้ำ ไม่เบียดเบียนสกุล เข้าไปหาสกุลแล้ว ควรให้รู้พุทธคุณ แล้วตรัสว่า
มุนีพึงเที่ยวไปในบ้านเหมือนแมลงภู่ ไม่ทำดอก สี และกลิ่นให้ชอกช้ำ ถือเอาแต่รสแล้วบินไป
เมื่อพระพุทธเจ้าเทศนาจบ ชนเป็นอันมาก บรรลุอริยผลทั้งหลาย มีโสดาปัตติผลเป็นต้น
吝啬鬼 – 憍尸迦长者
从前有一位富翁名叫憍尸迦,住在离王舍城不远的娑迦村。他性格吝啬,拥有8亿财富,但从不将财富给任何人。没有人从他的财富中受益，包括自己、儿女、妻子以及沙门婆罗门等。
一天,富翁去觐见摩揭陀国王。回家途中,他看见一个村民正在吃烙饼,顿时非常想吃。回到家后,他想如果说出自己想吃烙饼,很多人也会想吃,这样就会浪费很多材料,如芝麻、大米、酥油、糖浆等。因为害怕花钱,他决定不告诉任何人。但几天过去了,他还是很想吃,身体因此消瘦,筋骨毕现。
富翁的妻子注意到丈夫的变化,便上前询问原因。最后,富翁告诉妻子自己想吃烙饼,但只要做够他一个人吃的量,因为他不想分给任何人,甚至是自己的妻子。他让妻子用碎米,准备少量牛奶、酥油、蜂蜜和糖浆,到七层宫殿的顶层去烙饼。富翁从第一层到第六层的每一扇门都上了锁和闩,然后上到第七层关上门,以确保没人看见。
佛陀出定后,观察可以被引导而觉悟的众生,看到富翁和他妻子有证得须陀洹果的潜质。于是他吩咐大目犍连尊者以神通去降服富翁的傲慢,让夫妇俩带着烙饼、牛奶、酥油、蜂蜜和糖浆来到祇园精舍,他和500位比丘将在精舍等候。
尊者用神通力来到富翁家,站在宫殿窗前。富翁看见后想赶走他,但尊者没有离开。目犍连展示神通,在空中经行、结跏趺坐,站在窗台上,阻挡烟雾上升。富翁以为尊者真的想要烙饼,就让妻子做一小块给他。但小块饼下锅后变成了大块。富翁不满意,亲自动手,但饼越做越大。他厌烦了,就给了尊者一块饼。
但当他拿起一块饼时,所有的饼都粘在一起成了一大块。无论怎么做都无法分开。富翁累了,饥饿感和对烙饼的渴望也消失了,就让妻子把所有的饼都供养给尊者。
尊者向两人说法,讲述佛法僧三宝的功德,展示布施的果报,说:”布施有果报,祭祀有回报。”富翁因此生起信心。
尊者用神通带富翁夫妇到祇园精舍见佛陀。两人向以佛陀为首的僧团献水,妻子将烙饼放入如来的钵中。两人吃到满足,尽管他们给精舍里的所有比丘和穷人都分发了烙饼,饼却没有用完。佛陀让他们把剩下的饼倒在祇园精舍的拱门那里,至今那里仍被称为”烙饼堆”。
之后,世尊作了随喜。随喜结束时,两人证得须陀洹果。他们向佛陀礼拜,从祇园精舍的拱门走上阶梯,阶梯的尽头是自己的宫殿。从那以后,富翁慷慨地将他的8亿财富用于佛教事业。
第二天,佛陀在比丘们面前赞扬目犍连是一位能降服他人、不伤害信仰、不损害财富、不使家族受伤、不骚扰家族的比丘,他走进家族时让他们了解佛陀的功德。然后佛陀说:
“智者入村落时应当像蜜蜂一样,不伤害花朵的色泽和香气,只采蜜后飞走。”
佛陀说法结束后,许多人证得须陀洹果等圣果。
Kosiya, the Miserly Millionaire
Once upon a time, there was a millionaire named Kosiya who lived in the Sakka village, not far from the city of Rajagaha. He was known for his miserly nature, despite possessing a vast fortune of 80 crores(800 million). He never gave his wealth to anyone. No one ever benefited from his riches, not even himself, his children, his wife, or the ascetics and brahmins.
One day, while returning home after visiting King Bimbisara of Magadha, the millionaire saw a villager eating a pancake. He suddenly developed an intense craving for pancakes. However, upon reaching home, he thought that if he expressed his desire for pancakes, many others would also want to eat them, which would lead to a significant waste of ingredients such as ghee, rice, butter, molasses, and more. Fearing the loss of money, he decided not to tell anyone about his craving. But as days passed, his longing for pancakes grew stronger, causing him to lose weight and his veins to become visible.
The millionaire’s wife noticed the change in her husband’s appearance and asked him about the reason behind it. Eventually, the millionaire confessed to his wife that he craved pancakes and asked her to make them only for him, as he did not want to share them with anyone, not even his own wife. He instructed her to use broken rice, and to prepare a small amount of milk, butter, honey, and molasses. He then asked her to go to the top floor of their seven-story mansion to make the pancakes. The millionaire locked every door from the first floor to the sixth floor, using bolts and bars, and then went up to the seventh floor, locking the door to ensure that no one could see them.
After emerging from his meditation, the Buddha surveyed the world to find beings who could be guided towards enlightenment. He saw the potential for the millionaire and his wife to attain the fruit of stream-entry(sotāpanna). The Buddha then instructed Venerable Maha Moggallana to subdue the millionaire’s pride and bring the couple, along with the pancakes, milk, butter, honey, and molasses, to the Jetavana monastery using his psychic powers. The Buddha, along with 500 monks, would be waiting in the monastery to receive the pancakes.
Venerable Maha Moggallana went to the millionaire’s house using his psychic powers and stood at the window of the mansion. When the millionaire saw him, he tried to drive the monk away, but Venerable Maha Moggallana remained steadfast. The monk then displayed his psychic powers by walking and sitting cross-legged in the air, standing on the window ledge, and blocking the smoke from rising. The millionaire, realizing that the monk truly desired the pancakes, instructed his wife to make a small pancake for the monk. However, when the small piece of batter was poured into the pan, it turned into a large pancake. Displeased, the millionaire decided to make the pancakes himself, but the pancakes kept growing larger and larger. Frustrated, he gave one pancake to the monk.
But when he tried to pick up one pancake, all the pancakes stuck together as one large piece. No matter how hard he tried, he could not separate the pancakes. Exhausted and no longer hungry or craving pancakes, the millionaire told his wife to offer all the pancakes to the monk.
Venerable Maha Moggallana then preached the Dhamma to the couple, extolling the virtues of the Triple Gem and explaining the fruits of giving. He said, “The alms that one gives bear fruit, and the sacrifices one performs bear fruit.” The millionaire was deeply impressed.
Using his psychic powers, the monk took the millionaire and his wife to the presence of the Buddha at the Jetavana monastery. The couple offered water of dedication to the Sangha, led by the Buddha. The wife placed pancakes in the Buddha’s alms bowl. Both of them ate pancakes to their heart’s content, and even after offering pancakes to every monk in the monastery and to all the destitute people, the pancakes did not run out. The Buddha then instructed them to dispose of the remaining pancakes at the entrance arch of the Jetavana monastery. To this day, that place is known as the “Pancake Arch.”
Afterwards, the Blessed One delivered an anumodana (rejoicing in merit). At the end of the anumodana, both the millionaire and his wife attained the fruit of stream-entry. They paid homage to the Buddha and ascended the steps at the entrance arch of the Jetavana monastery, reaching the top of the steps at their own mansion. From that day onwards, the millionaire generously donated his wealth of 80 crores(800 million) to the Buddha’s dispensation as he saw fit.
The following day, the Buddha praised Venerable Maha Moggallana to the monks, saying, “He is a monk who subdues without disturbing faith, without disturbing wealth, without causing harm to families. When approaching families, he should make them aware of the qualities of the Buddha.” The Buddha then recited the following verse:
“A sage should wander in the village like a bee, not harming the flowers, their color, or fragrance, taking only the nectar and then flying away.”
When the Buddha finished his sermon, many people attained various stages of enlightenment, starting with stream-entry.
