\u300a\u5c38\u4f3d\u7f57\u8d8a\u7ecf\u300b\u662f\u4f5b\u9640\u5b89\u4f4f\u5728\u738b\u820d\u57ce\u7684\u8fe6\u5170\u9640\u7af9\u6797\u56ed\u65f6\u6240\u5f00\u793a\u7684\u3002\u6709\u4e00\u5929\u65e9\u6668\uff0c\u4f5b\u9640\u7740\u8863\u6301\u94b5\uff0c\u51c6\u5907\u5165\u738b\u820d\u57ce\u6258\u94b5\u5316\u7f18\uff0c\u9047\u5230\u4e86\u4e00\u4e2a\u53eb\u505a\u5c38\u4f3d\u7f57\u8d8a\u7684\u7537\u5b50\u3002\u8fd9\u4f4d\u7537\u5b50\u4e00\u5927\u6e05\u65e9\u8d77\u5e8a\uff0c\u8d70\u51fa\u738b\u820d\u57ce\uff0c\u6e7f\u8863\u3001\u6e7f\u53d1\uff0c\u5408\u638c\u793c\u62dc\u5404\u65b9\uff1a\u4e1c\u65b9\u3001\u5357\u65b9\u3001\u897f\u65b9\u3001\u5317\u65b9\u3001\u4e0b\u65b9\u548c\u4e0a\u65b9\u3002\u4f5b\u9640\u95ee\u8fd9\u4f4d\u7537\u5b50\u5728\u505a\u4ec0\u4e48\uff1f\u4ed6\u56de\u7b54\u8bf4\u81ea\u5df1\u6b63\u5728\u6309\u7167\u7236\u4eb2\u7684\u9057\u5631\u793c\u656c\u516d\u65b9\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On one occasion, while the Blessed One was staying at the Veluvana Monastery in Rajagaha, he put on his robes in the morning, and carrying his bowl and outer robe, entered the city of Rajagaha for alms. He saw Sigalaka, a householder’s son, who had gotten up early and gone out of Rajagaha, paying homage to the various directions with wet clothes and hair, and with palms joined together in reverence – to the east, the south, the west, the north, the nadir, and the zenith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Blessed One asked him, “Young householder, why are you paying homage to the various directions in this way?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sigalaka replied, “Venerable sir, I am worshipping the six directions in accordance with the last instructions of my deceased father.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8fd9\u540d\u53eb\u5c38\u4f3d\u7f57\u8d8a\u7684\u7537\u5b50\uff0c\u4e4b\u6240\u4ee5\u4f1a\u793c\u62dc\u516d\u65b9\u7684\u539f\u56e0\u662f\uff0c\u4ed6\u7684\u53cc\u4eb2\u7686\u4e3a\u8654\u8bda\u4fe1\u5949\u4f5b\u9640\u4e4b\u4eba\uff0c\u5e76\u4e14\u7686\u5df2\u8bc1\u5f97\u987b\u9640\u6d39\u679c\uff08\u540e\u6765\uff0c\u4ed6\u7684\u6bcd\u4eb2\u66f4\u51fa\u5bb6\u6210\u4e3a\u6bd4\u4e18\u5c3c\uff0c\u8bc1\u5f97\u963f\u7f57\u6c49\u679c\uff0c\u6210\u4e3a\u5c38\u4f3d\u7f57\u8d8a\u957f\u8001\u5c3c\uff09\u3002\u7236\u6bcd\u4eb2\u62c5\u5fe7\u81ea\u5df1\u6b7b\u540e\uff0c\u513f\u5b50\u5e76\u6ca1\u6709\u4fe1\u4ef0\u4f5b\u9640\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u51b3\u5b9a\u6559\u5bfc\u513f\u5b50\u5411\u5404\u65b9\u793c\u62dc\uff0c\u5e0c\u671b\u80fd\u5229\u76ca\u5b69\u5b50\u3002\u867d\u7136\u5c38\u4f3d\u7f57\u8d8a\u5c1a\u672a\u660e\u767d\u884c\u793c\u7684\u542b\u4e49\uff0c\u4e0d\u8fc7\u4e5f\u6309\u7167\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u7406\u89e3\u6765\u5b8c\u6210\u7236\u6bcd\u4eb2\u7684\u5631\u5490\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reason Sigalaka, the householder’s son, went out to pay homage to the six directions was that both his father and mother had faith in the Fully Enlightened Buddha and were stream-enterers (his mother later ordained as a bhikkhuni and attained arahantship, known as Bhikkhuni Singalamata). However, their son did not have faith in the Buddha. When the householder was on his deathbed, he thought, “I will give this instruction to my son: ‘My dear child, you should pay reverence to the directions.’\u201d He will not understand the meaning and but paid reverence to the directions anyway. When the Lord Buddha and his disciples, seeing Sigalaka paying reverence during his routine, his Holiness asked \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201dSigalaka responded, \u201cMy father instructed me to pay reverence to the directions.\u201d The Lord Buddha then began to expound Dhamma to Sigalaka, saying, \u201cYour father did not want you to pay reverence to those directions, but to these directions: having understood the value of the Buddha’s dispensation, the householder will then perform meritorious deeds well, until instructing his son to follow these directions as well. The son followed his father’s instructions, and it was then that the Buddha encountered him and inquired about his actions. Sigalaka, the householder’s son, replied that he was paying homage to the six directions because his father had instructed him to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4f5b\u9640\u53c8\u4ee5\u5048\u8bed\u8865\u5145\uff0c\u56db\u6444\u6cd5\uff08\u5e03\u65bd\u3001\u7231\u8bed\u3001\u5229\u884c\u3001\u540c\u4e8b\uff09\u5b9e\u4e3a\u667a\u8005\u6240\u5949\u884c\u4e4b\u6cd5\uff0c\u80fd\u4ee4\u4eba\u4e8e\u516d\u65b9\u4eba\u9645\u5173\u7cfb\u4e4b\u4e2d\u83b7\u5f97\u6210\u5c31\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Blessed One then instructed Sigalaka, the young householder, that in the Noble Discipline, one should not pay homage to the directions in this manner. When Sigalaka asked how he should pay homage, the Buddha replied:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The noble disciple, having abandoned the four defilements of action, does not commit evil deeds on four grounds, and does not indulge in the six channels for dissipating wealth. Thus, the noble disciple is one who is free from these fourteen evil ways. He is said to have covered the six directions and to have practiced for the conquest of both worlds. Having set forth for both this world and the next, after death, with the breakup of the body, the noble disciple is reborn in a good destination, a heavenly world.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Buddha then proceeded to explain in detail the various points he had mentioned:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. The four defilements of action (kamma-kilesa) to be abandoned:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Taking life<\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Stealing<\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Sexual misconduct<\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – False speech<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. The four grounds on which evil deeds are not committed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Not committing evil deeds motivated by desire (chanda)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Not committing evil deeds motivated by hatred (dosa)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Not committing evil deeds motivated by delusion (moha)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Not committing evil deeds motivated by fear (bhaya)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. The six channels for dissipating wealth to avoid:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Indulgence in intoxicants<\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Roaming the streets at unseemly hours<\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Frequenting shows and festivities<\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Gambling <\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Associating with evil companions<\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Laziness<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Sigalaka, the householder’s son, heard the Buddha’s discourse, he gained clear understanding of the six directions and the importance of refraining from evil deeds. Filled with confidence in the teaching, he declared himself a lay follower, taking refuge in the Triple Gem for the rest of his life. Moreover, he “distributed 40 kotis of wealth in the Buddha’s dispensation, performing meritorious deeds, and became one destined for heaven in his next life.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
