\u542f\u793a<\/strong><\/p>\n \u4ece\u8fd9\u4e2a\u6545\u4e8b\u53ef\u4ee5\u770b\u51fa\uff0c\u6539\u5584\u751f\u6d3b\u54c1\u8d28\u7684\u6700\u4f73\u65b9\u6cd5\u5c31\u662f\u79ef\u7d2f\u529f\u5fb7\u3002\u5927\u7a77\u662f\u57ce\u91cc\u6700\u8d2b\u7a77\u7684\u4eba\uff0c\u4f46\u56e0\u4e3a\u4f9b\u517b\u4e86\u8fe6\u53f6\u4f5b\u800c\u6210\u4e3a\u5bcc\u7fc1\u3002\u800c\u4e14\uff0c\u7531\u4e8e\u4ed6\u4ece\u6b64\u4e4b\u540e\uff0c\u4e00\u751f\u90fd\u5728\u79ef\u7d2f\u529f\u5fb7\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u5728\u4e0b\u8f88\u5b50\u4e03\u5c81\u65f6\u5c31\u51fa\u5bb6\uff0c\u5e76\u8bc1\u5f97\u963f\u7f57\u6c49\u679c\u3002<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Mah\u0101duggata<\/p>\n In the era of the Kassapa Buddha, there was a wise man who invited Kassapa Buddha and 20,000 monks to receive alms the following day. After the Buddha accepted, this wise man went into the village and proclaimed the merit of giving to the villagers, asking everyone to contribute according to their ability. \u201cSome people sponsored 10 monks, some sponsored 20, some sponsored 100, some sponsored 500, etc.\u201d He recorded all the sponsors in a ledger.<\/p>\n At that time, there was a man named \u201cMah\u0101duggata,\u201d who was the poorest man in the city. The wise man said to him, \u201cFriend Mah\u0101duggata, I have invited the Sangha led by the Buddha to receive alms tomorrow. The people in the city will be giving alms. How many monks do you plan to support?\u201d<\/p>\n Mah\u0101duggata said, \u201cI don\u2019t even have rice to make porridge for myself tomorrow, how can I support monks?\u201d The wise man said, \u201cFriend Mah\u0101duggata, many people in this city eat well and dress well, while you work all day and don\u2019t even have enough food to fill your stomach. Don\u2019t you realize that this is because you haven\u2019t done any good deeds in the past?\u201d<\/p>\n Mah\u0101duggata replied, \u201cI know.\u201d The wise man continued, \u201cIf that\u2019s the case, why don\u2019t you start doing good deeds and make merit now? You are still young and strong, you can work and earn money, and then give alms according to your ability, wouldn\u2019t that be good?\u201d Mah\u0101duggata felt ashamed and said, \u201cPlease register one monk for me. I will find work and then offer food to one monk.\u201d The wise man thought, \u201cWhat\u2019s the point of registering only one monk?\u201d So he didn\u2019t write it down.<\/p>\n Mah\u0101duggata returned home and said to his wife, \u201cTomorrow the people in the city are preparing food to offer to the monks, and I was invited too. Let\u2019s offer food to one monk tomorrow.\u201d His wife said, \u201cThat\u2019s great! We didn\u2019t make merits in the past, that\u2019s why we are so poor in this life. Let\u2019s both find some work and then offer food to one monk.\u201d So they both went out to find work.<\/p>\n Mah\u0101duggata went to the house of a wealthy man in the city. The wealthy man said, \u201cTomorrow I will offer food to 300 monks, you could chop wood for me.\u201d Mah\u0101duggata rolled up his sleeves, tightened his pants and worked very diligently. The wealthy man said, \u201cYou are working very diligently today, is there any reason?\u201d Mah\u0101duggata replied, \u201cI am going to offer food to one monk.\u201d<\/p>\n When the wealthy man heard this, he was filled with admiration and thought, \u201cThis Mah\u0101duggata is doing something difficult to do. He doesn\u2019t think he is poor, but says \u2018I will work and earn money and then offer food to one monk.\u2019\u201d Mah\u0101duggata\u2019s wife also went to help the wealthy man\u2019s wife with housework. The wealthy man\u2019s wife asked her, \u201cYou are working very happily today, is there any reason?\u201d She replied, \u201cI am doing this work in order to offer food to one monk.\u201d When the wealthy man\u2019s wife heard this, she thought, \u201cAdmirable, she is doing something difficult to do.\u201d<\/p>\n After Mah\u0101duggata finished chopping wood, the wealthy man gave him four measures of rice and said, \u201cThis is your wage.\u201d Then he gave him an additional four measures of rice as an offering for the alms together. The wealthy man\u2019s wife gave him a jar of ghee, a bottle of yogurt, some spices, and a basket of wheat.<\/p>\n The couple was very happy, thinking, \u201cWe have the items for the offering!\u201d They got up at dawn. His wife said to Mah\u0101duggata, \u201cGo and get some vegetables.\u201d He went to the river with a joyful heart, thinking, \u201cI will offer food to the venerable monk.\u201d He sang as he picked vegetables. A fisherman who was casting a net recognized Mah\u0101duggata\u2019s voice and asked, \u201cWhy are you in such a good mood?\u201d Mah\u0101duggata replied, \u201cI\u2019m going to offer food to a monk.\u201d The fisherman then asked Mah\u0101duggata to help him sell the fish and then shared some Indian carp with him as an offering for the alms together.<\/p>\n That day, Buddha Kassapa with his divine wisdom-eye, saw the extremely poor man Mah\u0101duggata, and knew he would come to make an offering. Meanwhile, when Sakka, ruler of the Second Heaven, learned Mah\u0101duggata would make an offering to the Buddha, he transformed himself into a human and volunteered to help prepare the food.\u201d<\/p>\n When the time arrived, Mah\u0101duggata went to the wise man to greet the monks. Seeing Mah\u0101duggata, the wise man recalled him and was astonished to realize that the villagers had already arranged to offer food to all 20,000 monks, leaving only the Buddha. Therefore, the wise man asked Mah\u0101duggata to invite the Buddha on his own.<\/p>\n Mah\u0101duggata went to the Buddha\u2019s residence. Prostrating himself at the door, he said, \u201cLord, there is no one poorer than me in this city. Please be my refuge, have mercy on me.\u201d The Buddha opened the door, placed the bowl in his hands, and proceeded to Mah\u0101duggata\u2019s house to accept the offering.<\/p>\n After the meal, when the Buddha had departed, seven kinds of jewels \u2013 diamonds and other gems \u2013 rained down upon Mah\u0101duggata\u2019s house, a result of the rare merit he had acquired by offering food to the Buddha, despite being the poorest man in the city. Upon learning of this extraordinary event, the king appointed him a wealthy man.\u201d<\/p>\n Having become a wealthy man, Mah\u0101duggata dedicated his life to performing good deeds and make merits. Upon his death, he was reborn in the heavens for an eon. Thereafter, he was reborn in the era of Gautama Buddha. At the age of seven, he became a monk, attained the state of Arahantship, and was known as the Arahant novice, Pa\u1e47\u1e0dita S\u0101ma\u1e47era.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Lessons:<\/strong><\/p>\n This story illustrates that the most effective way to improve one\u2019s quality of life is through the accumulation of merit. Mah\u0101duggata, once the poorest man in the city, became wealthy through his offering of alms to Kassapa Buddha. Furthermore, due to the merit he accrued throughout his lives, he was ordained in his subsequent life at the age of seven and attained Arahantship.<\/p>\n
