Some people are afraid of the word &#8220;rich&#8221;. We have come across the question &#8220;Why do you have to teach people to be rich? Does this mean we teach others to be greedy?&#8221; &#8220;No.&#8221; Rich and greedy are different words, not the same, spelling is not the same. To be rich, not to be greedy. But if you dislike the word \u201crich\u201d,<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go and try to be poor or<\/li>\n<li>Change the word to \u201chave food to eat, have things to use\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Wealth is like a tool to pursue perfection. The merit will not suddenly fall onto us. We have to make merit by ourselves.\u00a0 We need to be wealthy or have food to eat and have things to use. These are tools for our pursuit of perfection. For having to eat, we don&#8217;t eat much considering the size of our stomach. \u201cHaving things to use\u201d is important. We can use our wealth to buy land, house, furnitures inside the house, a car, buy this, buy that, and even buy an airplane. And most importantly, it is used to pursue perfection. Therefore, \u201chaving things to use\u201d is important. Billionaires of the world and all the billionaires from the past. Every single one of them must have pursued perfection of charity. Because we are the designers of our own life. We can be whatever our hearts desire. Let us notice, what is missing or incomplete in this life? We want to pursue perfection, but we do not have enough tools. Our determination is strong, but our capital is not enough. Our team may be ready, but the capital is not. If we put defilement in the middle of the body, our lives will be in darkness for hundreds, thousands or more lifetimes. That meeting will be greatly beneficial to the receiving party. Even if we never meet again. Because we give Dharma knowledge for them to survive and to be safe from evil, from the cycle of suffering. Hence, the giving of this Dharma is superior to all giving. Builder of the temple can be called a &#8220;giver of everything&#8221; and receives innumerable merits, which is larger than offering alms. Construction of permanent objects such as temple buildings, chapels, temple halls and giving them to temples will give us merit as long as we live. Because permanent objects last very long before they will decay. Even when we depart this world and if the objects still exist, we will continue to receive any merit that arises from the people who have come to use the place. They may come to remember the Triple Gems, come to practice meditation, or come to find enlightenment. The number of people may be in the hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, or millions. It is best if we devote our lives and minds to performing merit to the fullest, physically, mentally, financially, and intellectually with all family and friends. Do it with all your heart. Then, we will receive great merit resulting in incomparable fortunes that will astonishingly make us experience happiness and success. Just like virtuous people with great merit in the past. They possessed unimaginable wealth that does not get depleted ever. Merit will give us the best of everything and even support us to reach the utmost of the Dharma. Therefore, my sons and daughters, you must make merit and pursue perfection to the fullest with stronger determination than ever before. His good friends made a visit and invited him to pursue the perfection of giving. He was willing to make a donation and was happy to sign the check but his wife was reluctant. He pondered that he was deeply moved by what Luang Por had said. When we are healthy and have money, we must make merit. Now he was sick, and he could not go anywhere. Even he signed the check. But if his wife did not agree nor support him, he could not make a donation. At that moment he appreciated the teaching. Knowing this, it&#8217;s good to make merit when you are healthy. Therefore, anyone who is still healthy should consider this case carefully. Many people came to tell Luang Por that they appreciate the teaching now. When we are strong, we rarely make merit. When we are not strong or so sick that we can&#8217;t walk, our hands are so weak that they are unable to hold anything. Now, even if we want to make merit, we can&#8217;t do it to the fullest. The story is about giving alms that are very fruitful and was told to Anathapindika. Whether a person gives elaborate alms or not. If giving alms without respect, not giving with their own hands, giving their leftovers, or giving alms without believing in karma. These actions will result in the next life that the person would not be willing eat well although he is wealthy. The person will eat only old things overnight even having a lot of wealth. He would not be willing to use fine cloth and only likes rough fabrics even having a lot of wealth. He would not be willing to use good vehicles and only likes old things, even with a lot of wealth. He would not be willing to bring that wealth to nourish with what he desires. His family, children, wife, servants, etc does not listen to him. These are the fruits of karma that comes from giving without respect and not realizing the value of giving. For a person that gives with respect, it does not matter if the alms are elaborate or not. If the person gives with respect, gives with his own hands, does not give leftovers, and gives with a belief in karma and the result of karma, his alms will bear a wholesome fruit. Wherever he is reborn, his mind bows to good food, fine fabrics, good vehicles. His mind rejoices in what the mind desires. The family of the giver, children, wife, servants, etc., will obey him.
