But these four necessities can also be the sources of desire. If<br \/>\none is not careful, one can end up wanting much more than what one needs. When<br \/>\nthat happens, one must struggle to work so hard to try to earn as much as money as<br \/>\npossible in order to afford all the things that one wants. It is<br \/>\nno wonder that so much havoc has been wrought in the name of love.<br \/>\nIf one is to look at one\u2019s self critically, chances are that one will see many flaws. One<br \/>\nmay lack discipline. One may be lazy. One may still be lacking in terms of cleanliness\u00a0and orderliness.<\/p>\n<p>One may not like to make one\u2019s bed or do one\u2019s dishes. One may not<br \/>\nbe punctual. One may not help with the household chores. One may be easily irritated.<br \/>\nOne may have a tendency to find faults with others. Cleanliness<br \/>\nHuman beings are the sources of dirtiness on earth. Each one of us is like a walking<br \/>\ngarbage can, a walking corpse, a prisoner. The root cause of atrocities is dirtiness. When<br \/>\na person is dirty, his house will also be dirty.<br \/>\n\u2022 There are piles of dirty clothes on the floor.<br \/>\n\u2022 There are dirty dishes in the kitchen sink.<br \/>\nThe dining table and chairs are dirty. The kitchen floor is dirty. The room is in disarray.<br \/>\n\u2022 There are dirty shoes in front of the door.<br \/>\nThey are not properly cleaned and organized.<br \/>\n\u2022 The bedroom is in disarray.<br \/>\n\u2022 When things are not put in their proper places, the thought process goes awry.<br \/>\nWhen the office is dirty or not clean enough, it is impossible to expect the office workers<br \/>\nto work efficiently and effectively.<br \/>\n2. Orderliness<br \/>\nEverything needs to be put in its proper<br \/>\nplace and order from large to small or small<br \/>\nto large. In some cases, the \u201cfirst in, first<br \/>\nout\u201d principle needs to be applied. It means<br \/>\ndoing everything necessary to keep each<br \/>\nplace, whether it is a room, an office, etc.,<br \/>\norderly and neat.<br \/>\nand orderliness. One may not like to make one\u2019s bed or do one\u2019s dishes. One may not<br \/>\nbe punctual. One may not help with the household chores. One may be easily irritated.<br \/>\nOne may have a tendency to find faults with others. One may like to smoke and drink.<br \/>\nOne may like to gossip behind other people\u2019s back. Politeness<br \/>\nPoliteness is shown in the way one sits, lies down, stands and walks. One cannot sit,<br \/>\nlie down, stand or walk properly because\u2026<br \/>\n\u2022 One\u2019s things are not organized in an orderly fashion.<br \/>\n\u2022 Without orderliness, one\u2019s thought process goes awry.<br \/>\n\u2022 The thought process goes awry because one\u2019s body is dirty from one\u2019s head to<br \/>\none\u2019s toes.<br \/>\nSpeech is derived from one\u2019s thought process. Speech is used as a means of<br \/>\ncommunication. It allows others to understand what one is thinking. Polite speech<br \/>\nbegins with the ability to organize one\u2019s words. For example,<br \/>\n\u2022 Words that are used to communicate with one\u2019s children cannot be used to<br \/>\ncommunicate with one\u2019s father.<br \/>\n\u2022 Words that are used to communicate with one\u2019s friends cannot be used to<br \/>\ncommunicate with one\u2019s boss.<br \/>\n\u2022 Words that are used to communicate with one\u2019s friends cannot be used to<br \/>\ncommunicate with the Buddhist monks.<br \/>\n\u2022 The tender way spouses talk to each other cannot be used with other people.<br \/>\nThe root cause of conflicts in the office and at home, divorce, broken home is<br \/>\nself-indulgence. A self-indulgent person does not care about other people. He cares<br \/>\nonly about what he wants. He cares only about his own ease and comfort. He lacks<br \/>\nmotivation and commitment. Self-indulgent husband and wife lack motivation and<br \/>\ncommitment. Their children lack motivation and commitment. Everyone is into<br \/>\nself-indulgence. One dresses any way one likes. One behaves any way one likes.<\/p>\n<p>4. Punctuality<br \/>\nThe lack of orderliness leads to unpunctuality.<br \/>\nOne feels nothing about keeping other people<br \/>\nwaiting. Sometimes, a VIP guest is hours late at<br \/>\na grand opening. The children that were<br \/>\nscheduled to give a special performance at the<br \/>\ngrand opening arrived at the venue early,<br \/>\nforegoing their meal and other personal needs in<br \/>\norder to keep their makeup and costume in place,<br \/>\nonly to wait for hours to put on the performance<br \/>\njust because the VIP guest could not be bothered<br \/>\nto show up on time.<br \/>\nAs a child, one is woken up to get ready for school by one\u2019s parents or older siblings.<br \/>\nAs a grown-up, one uses an alarm clock. But sometimes, even an alarm clock fails to<br \/>\nwake one up in time for work or an important appointment.<br \/>\n5. Concentration (Meditation)<br \/>\nUnpuctuality is caused by the lack of concentration which in turn is caused by the lack<br \/>\nof cleanliness. Self-indulgence makes one feels that one can do anything one wants<br \/>\nand one could not care less about other people. Self-indulgence causes personal damage,<br \/>\nsocial damage and national damage. Every problem cited here must be solved by<br \/>\ncleanliness. Our body is the source of dirtiness. All of our bodies together make our<br \/>\nearth dirty. Feeling hot, cold, hungry, thirsty, having the need to urinate and defecate<br \/>\nare the forms of suffering experienced by everyone. They are caused by the fact that<br \/>\nthe four primary elements which make up our cells are dirty. Therefore, they die at the<br \/>\nrate of around 300 \u2013 400 million per minute. The food we eat helps our body to generate<br \/>\nnew cells to replace the old ones.<br \/>\nOur home, our clothes, our food, our medicine and everything else that we come into contact with become dirty because our body is dirty. Dirtiness leads to the lack of orderliness. The lack of orderliness leads to absent-mindedness which causes impoliteness.<br \/>\nImpoliteness is caused by self-indulgence, laziness, the lack of consideration for others. Cleanliness prevents the presence of pests. There is no need for<br \/>\npesticides. There is no need for killing. One\u2019s mind is gentle, and one does not<br \/>\nkill.<br \/>\n\u2022 Orderliness: One is not confused because everything is in its proper place. One<br \/>\nexercises moderation in one\u2019s consumption. One is thrifty. One does not steal.<br \/>\n\u2022 Politeness: One is not exploitative. One is not trying to outdo others. One is<br \/>\nsympathetic and empathic. One is considerate. One does not dress in an<br \/>\ninappropriate manner. One practices honest and gentle speech. One is not<br \/>\nsexually permissive. One does not commit sexual misconduct.<br \/>\n\u2022 Punctuality: One is constantly analyzing one\u2019s self. One has good self-knowledge.<br \/>\nOne has the ability to warn oneself. One undertakes self-improvement. One<br \/>\ndoes not tell lies.<br \/>\n\u2022 Concentration: One abstains from every cause of ruin. One\u2019s mind is calm,<br \/>\nhappy and expansive. One earnestly accumulates good deeds. One does not<br \/>\nconsume alcohol.<br \/>\nThe five aspects of Universal Goodness can be readily practiced by anyone. They are<br \/>\ngood for individuals as well as the community as a whole. They foster physical and<br \/>\nspiritual development. They do not violate any religious beliefs, doctrines or moral<br \/>\ncodes. They do not violate the rule of law, government policies, and human rights.<br \/>\nUniversal Goodness must be practiced regularly and continuously for it to give<br \/>\ninnumerable and lasting benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Where Does One Practice UG-5?<br \/>\nOne practices UG-5 in the five rooms of one\u2019s life where the five main daily activities<br \/>\nare performed.<br \/>\nEvery day a person wakes up, gets out of bed and heads straight for the bathroom. And<br \/>\nthen he goes to the kitchen to have breakfast. Afterward, he gets dressed and goes to<br \/>\nwork. After work, he returns home, undresses and gets ready for dinner. After dinner,<br \/>\nhe goes to the bathroom and spends the rest of the evening reading, watching television,<br \/>\netc., until it is time to go to bed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Daily Activities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. Wake up in the morning<\/p>\n<p>\u21d3<\/p>\n<p>2. Bathe one\u2019s face, brush one\u2019s teeth,<br \/>\nurinate, defecate, take a shower<\/p>\n<p>\u21d3<\/p>\n<p>3. One knows<br \/>\nto put everything in its proper place so that it is easy to locate. When one knows to<br \/>\nput everything one owns in order, one will be able to put one\u2019s thought in order. When<br \/>\none knows to put one\u2019s thought in order, one will be able to put one\u2019s word in order.<br \/>\nWhen one knows to put one\u2019s word in order, one will be able to control the way one<br \/>\nsits, stands, lies down and walks. One has good manners and one knows to dress<br \/>\nappropriately. One knows to exercise self-restraint at all times. One knows exactly how<br \/>\nto choose the right word and the right tone so that one can communicate one\u2019s thought<br \/>\neffectively and politely. One knows to manage one\u2019s time; therefore, one is punctual.<br \/>\nWith punctuality comes concentration. The more one practices meditation, the clearer<br \/>\nand the more effective one\u2019s mind will be.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Harm of Dirtiness<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When one neglects to practice cleanliness,<\/p>\n<p>\u21d3<br \/>\nCreativity will be absent.<\/p>\n<p>\u21d3<br \/>\nWhen one cannot put everything one owns in its proper place,<\/p>\n<p>\u21d3<br \/>\nOne cannot control how one sits, stands, lies down<br \/>\nand walks. One is self-indulgent in everything including sexual matters. One<br \/>\nthinks nothing of committing adultery. One goes home late or not at all. One thinks<br \/>\nnothing of lying. Eventually, one becomes attention deficient. These are the ill<br \/>\nconsequences of dirtiness.<\/p>\n<p>A habit is defined as a settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard<br \/>\nto give up. Habits are formed while performing all the activities having to do with the<br \/>\nconsumption of the four necessities of life and everything related to them. The habits<br \/>\nthus formed, whether they are crude or refined, dictate how other activities in life are<br \/>\nperformed.
